Talk Derby to Me: Maidens 19, Babes 187

by Doug MacRostie

The enthusiastic explosion of Women’s Roller Derby is the best thing to happen in Northern Minnesota since Bob Dylan’s Hibbing disassociation fed a generation’s musical hunger for free expression. I love the fast action, energetic atmosphere of LOCAL teams playing their hearts out – something that’s lost even at the college level.

Introductions

Bemidji’s Babe City Rollers (aka Babes) were the first team to get started in this region and helped inspire the founding of the Grand Rapid’s area Iron Range Maidens (aka Maidens), and it has been a long time coming to see these two teams finally go at it!

All Rise for The Brass Kings

by Doug MacRostie

I got an invite from Steve Kaul and found out The Brass Kings are playing at the Blue Ox in Bemidji tonight!

A trio of world class musicians out of Minneapolis, The Brass Kings are an acoustic roots band with Mikkel Beckman on washboard, refrigerator parts, hand drums and pieces of wood – it’s really fun to watch him make the rhythms. Brad Ptacekt plays a furious washtub bass and Steve Kaul, originally from Bemidji, plays acoustic and Resonator guitars & sings.

Let’s Celerbrate Some Lady Slippers

by Doug MacRostie

The Lady Slipper Celebration is a community event starting in Blackduck, MN that follows the Lady SlipperĀ  Scenic Byway through Pennington all the way to Cass Lake. Timed when Minnesota’s State Flower will likely be in peak bloom, the event also celebrates the history, rich cultural heritage, and the diverse arts of the area.
